Grammar Point: Verbs like "Gustar"
In Spanish, verbs like gustar, interesar, doler, encantar work differently than in English. Instead of saying “I like the movie,” Spanish says “The movie pleases me” → Me gusta la película.
Structure:
Indirect Object Pronoun + Verb + Subject
Me gusta el cine → I like the cinema.
Te interesa la música → Music interests you.
Nos encantan los libros → We love books.
Me duele la cabeza → My head hurts.
Questions:
To ask questions, use:
¿Te gusta…? → Do you like…?
¿Te interesa…? → Are you interested in…?
Justifying preferences:
Use porque (because) + explanation.
Example: Me gusta leer porque es relajante. → I like reading because it is relaxing.
Expressing intensity:
mucho → a lot
bastante → quite
un poco → a little
nada → not at all
Example: No me gusta nada bailar. → I don’t like dancing at all.
